Often out of necessity comes an idea or business.   I started this non – lethal self defense business because of personal experience.  One of my many jobs is in home insurance sales.  Several years ago I went into a home that had been broken into the week before.  The neighborhood was not great and known for drug houses.  The woman I was meeting with looked at the necklace I was wearing and said if anyone saw that – they would rip it off my neck!!

It hit me – what the heck am I doing going into people’s homes, neighborhoods, businesses without anything for my own personal protection.  Safety is often taken for granted and thinking about carrying something for self defense such as pepper spray  or a stun gun rarely crosses our mind.  Well, it should and that is why I do this.  I was reminded again yesterday and happy to say I was prepared this time.

Once again it’s my busy time of year for insurance sales.  I had an appointment with a client way out in the country.  It was so far out that cell service was not available and his house was so far out the pavement turned into gravel and dirt.  While I was approaching the house I saw a truck sitting on the road I rolled my window down and asked if there was a house further down…the dirtied man in black and white stripes said he wasn’t sure (escaped convict came to my mind)….I kept driving and sure enough found the house.

My client was out front waiting for me and watched as I took everything from my car.  We went in the house to the kitchen table where most business takes place.  I put my computer and bag down and started to sit at the head of the table.  He told me to sit by him so he could see…from the begininng this made me uncomfortable.  He told me how he and his wife had built this house but she still lived in the city  and didn’t come out there except for occasional weekends.

As I began my presentation I noticed he was moving closer to me and that his leg was almost touching mine.  An uneasiness came over me and I moved my chair a bit and my body to the farthest part of the chair.   I sat up straighter and was acutely aware of everything going on.  The way he looked at me, his body language and actions told me something was not right.  This feeling isn’t one I get very often – in fact, I’ve only felt it a couple times in my life.  Each time there proved to be a reason for my uneasiness.

I hurried through my presentation and never turned my back on my client.  When I got more sales materials out of my bag I was comforted to that my compact smack keychain stun gun was within reach and easily accessible if I needed it.  These items offer peace of mind and security in situations we hope never to be in.
